Space

How we’re helping the UK’s defence leader to reach further to connect and protect.

The client

BAE Systems is possibly the UK’s best known defence specialist, with over 90,000 employees in 40 countries providing some of the world’s most advanced, technology-led defence, aerospace and security solutions.

The brief

The Farnborough International Air Show is the most prestigious air-focused defence event in the world.

As a leading UK business, BAE Systems had a high-profile and stunning hall. The company approached Kaptcha at short notice to develop a highlight film for the hall’s main visual display, in order to:

  • promote BAE’s space capabilities and applications
  • present the BAE brand as an acknowledged thought leader in this emerging field of defence development

Creative with Purpose

As well as being exceptionally high-profile (both physically in the room and in being seen by leaders across the industry globally), our brief was uniquely complex.

Many visitors would be steeped in today’s military thinking: space represents a genuinely new, and therefore challenging defence frontier.

Our job was to present space positively – as an opportunity with benefits to mankind as well as a defence necessity. To frame the opportunity in terms which an uninformed visitor can understand: for example, a chance to unify cyber and physical strategies. To recognise BAE’s heritage in both space aeronautics and data mining. And all in terms which also subtly reinforce BAE’s role in supporting the UK’s position as a global defence leader.

To achieve all this, our creative is dramatic and delivered on a grand scale – designed for the big screen – whilst earning credibility by featuring BAE’s own leaders.

It positions BAE at the cutting edge (e.g. ‘Minority-Report’-style representations of tech which will be understood by a global audience) and uses arresting visual techniques (e.g. text rendered backwards ‘through the screen’ to drive attention).

The company had already approached Kaptcha to develop a highlight film for the hall’s main visual display.

While the display film would present BAE Systems’ broad vision for space, additionally, we were commissioned to produce an animation which would demonstrate BAE’s commitment to a completely new data paradigm – using real-time satellite processing and delivery – with a specific law enforcement use case.

Creative with Purpose

Our animation presents an easily understood and entirely linear narrative to demonstrate the importance of satellite and space innovation in innovating the next generation of data-driven defence and law enforcement.

The animation shows the deployment of a constellation of satellites, a marine law enforcement application, and crucially – in simple terms – how data can be seamlessly processed, assessed and used in the field without ever returning to Earth.

The creative is dramatic, building to crescendos with each new evolution of “the art of the possible” in satellite data processing.

We also marry animation with stock footage to show how challenging concepts (multiple satellites working automatically to send data where it’s needed most) yield real-world results (a law enforcement boat speeding to its target).

The animation is ambitious, fast-moving and visionary, positioning BAE Systems at the forefront of aeronautics technology and as a credible strategy leader.

Molly's Puzzle

BAE Systems

Molly's Puzzle

How we showed that a company which protects our country also protects our children.

The client

BAE Systems is possibly the UK’s best known defence specialist. As the nature of the threat has changed, so has the business.

BAE Systems Digital Intelligence helps nations, governments and businesses around the world defend themselves against cybercrime, reduce their risk in the connected world, comply with regulation and transform their operations.

The brief

Kaptcha has worked with BAE Systems on several projects, both for internal communications and external-facing marketing. BAE Systems Applied Intelligence (now BAE Systems Digital Intelligence) approached us to develop a film which would have a transformative effect on their marketing and brand.

The company already has a reputation for operating at the cutting edge of cybersecurity. But potential customers (and the next generation of talent) might not know that the same skills and technologies are saving children’s lives in the service of police child exploitation and online protection (CEOP) teams. We were commissioned to tell that story.

Creative with Purpose

‘Molly’s Puzzle’ is, at heart, a customer testimonial. But we realised that we had to do so much more.

We had to demonstrate that the business has a much broader mission and purpose than defence. ‘Molly’s Puzzle’ explains how information technologies can be applied to many public sector problems.

We had to make the complex simple. We explained BAE Systems Digital Intelligence’s contribution to Gloucestershire Constabulary simply and accessibly through the ‘puzzle’ metaphor. And we had to make the sensitive palatable; by intricately threading perspectives from both Gloucester Constabulary and BAE Systems Digital Intelligence employees, effectively ‘solving the puzzle’ as the story is told.

Impact

‘Molly’s Puzzle’ makes a challenging but important story easier to tell, and it is therefore now a key part of BAE Systems Digital Intelligence’s sales armoury.

It is also being used publicly as part of BAE Systems Digital Intelligence’s web and social media activity, where it consistently generates an uplift in click-throughs to landing pages.

Watch the video testimonial below.

Testimonial

“At an internal award ceremony, ‘Molly’s Puzzle’ got a standing ovation. It’s an emotional story. But the way it’s presented, the music, and the way it was shot: that is where Kaptcha has managed to grab the essence of what we do, and turn it into something which creates emotion. And it makes people feel very proud to work here.”
